The Experience

It breaths

During one of my end-of-the year personal retreats I had a strange experience: “I” was following “the breath” – just exactly the way the instructions say to do it! They call it Mindful Breathing: Awareness of the body breathing. The “I” wasn’t doing the breathing, the breathing was just happening – the “I” was just watching the breathing. I once read of a monk that spent a year alone in a cave. When he came out he said “It breaths”. Yet during my experience I still had the feeling “I am”. Who was breathing? That was my first experience of the Watcher watching the Actor.
